Rangers split season series with Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – Northwestern Oklahoma State Baseball faced Newman University Wednesday afternoon. The Jets took the mid-week game by a final 13-3 over the Rangers to split the season series 1-1. The Jets used a five run fifth inning to take a five run lead over the Rangers never trailing again.

Harley Shaffer led the team with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI all team highs. Hagen Barcello finished with an RBI along with Trevor Stiles for the final Ranger RBI.

Jacob McMahan started the game for the Rangers throwing 1.2 innings striking out one. Matthew Potts threw in relief, striking out three, along with Jacob Shaw, Zac McEachern, Jacob Fuller and Koby Hudson.

Harley Shaffer started the game for the Rangers with a leadoff double to center field before Barcello hit him in with an RBI single to left field taking a first inning lead.

The Rangers carried the one run lead into the bottom of the second inning when the Jets tied the game on an RBI infield single with the bases loaded. The Rangers were able to escape further damage as Matthew Potts struck out the final hitter of the inning.

Newman took their first lead of the game with a two out double to left field scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead over the Rangers after three innings of play.

The Red-and-Black though wasted no time answering back to tie the game as Joseph Frisby led off with a walk before advancing to third. An RBI groundout by Trevor Stiles made the game 3-2 before a solo home run by H. Shaffer tied the game at 3-3.

The game remained 3-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Newman added five runs first off a bases loaded walk to take a 4-3 lead. Marquis followed with a 2-RBI single before Angelico went back to back singles scoring two more runs as the Jets opened an 8-3 lead.

Newman allowed one base runner in the next two innings before adding a run in the seventh inning after a single and a stolen base set up an RBI single by Wohl, scoring Kiser for a 9-3 lead for the Jets.

The Jets sealed the win in the 8th scoring four runs taking a 13-3 lead to win the game by that final score. The inning started with two walks before a single set up bases loaded with nobody out. A walk and an error brought the game to 11-3. A sacrifice fly brought their lead to 12-3 before an RBI single won the game for the Jets.
