The Alfalfa County commissioners proclaimed May 7-13 Oklahoma Home and Community Education Week on Monday.

OHCE is a statewide, county-based organization that partners with Oklahoma State University and OSU Extension. Members seek to develop leadership skills and strengthen families in their respective communities. OHCE members and county Extension educators work together to identify issues facing the county and use research-based information from specialists at OSU to help solve those problems.

As Nate Ross, Mike Roach and Garret Johnson signed the proclamation, members from Alfalfa County OHCE – Pat Marzolf, Tammi Miller, Nancy Lambert, Mary Korf, Cheryl Poe and Marguerite McMurtrey – joined for a picture. After taking care of the routine stuff, including monthly reports, appropriations and alcohol beverage tax allocation, the three men talked about donating the county's workout room equipment to a couple of their senior citizen's centers and Timberlake High School.

Tammi Miller, who serves as Alfalfa County's court clerk, was present in the gallery and stated that in the face of things being taken away from employees (like possible cuts to health insurance), it seemed contradictory to take yet something else (the workout area and equipment) away from employees to give the space to just one single employee, who, in this case, would be the incoming emergency manager. The commissioners said the area the last emergency manager used was too small. Revamping the old workout room calls for a bathroom installation, which means more costs for contractors, plumbers and electricians. They decided to start getting quotes and agreed to have the workout equipment cleared out this week.

Officials opened a few bids sent for a belly dump trailer, opting to go with the lowest bid, which was Bruckner's for $41,410. They then took care of other items, signing the title sheet for a bridge (Structure no. 02E0250N2660001) for District 3 and approving for County Clerk Laneta Schwerdtfeger to go out for bids on bridge materials and labor.

Next, they signed a resolution to dispose of a 2006 IHC 7600 International (Inv. no. D3 302-316 2006, Serial No. 1HSWYAHR46J390400) and then the software lease and maintenance agreement for the Treasurer's office between the County and TM Consulting.

Before adjourning, Commissioner Ross brought up a discussion about CDL training. There is currently a shortage of CDL drivers, and attaining more is difficult due to astronomical training costs. However, Ross said other officials he has talked to are working on getting some of their employees started on their CDL training by finding a creative way to finance it. Some of the ideas would need to be run past the district attorney. They took no action.

Lastly, they voted unanimously to lift the burn ban, effective immediately.
