After weeks spent planning and painting, three young artists from Alva entered their waterfowl paintings in the state Duck Stamp contest. Local art instructor Jo Decker worked with the girls on the project.

Friday afternoon, the girls learned the results of their work. A reception was held for family members at Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva. Melissa Robell, visitor services specialist at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge arrived with their entries to announce the results. Robell said the Duck Stamp contest raises awareness of waterfowl and encourages youth in education and art.

Joplin Bradt received first in her division and third overall at state. Lyla Schmidt was chosen second in her division, and Libby Keller received honorable mention. The girls were presented with gift bags. Their instructor, Jo Decker, was also presented with a gift bag of art supplies in appreciation of her work with the students.

Following the presentation, the winners and family members enjoyed cookies, cupcakes and other refreshments.
