Alva Ladybugs sweep Luther in doubleheader Monday

ALVA – The Alva Ladybug shutout Luther in Monday's home opener and allowed only one run in the second. With the two victories, the Alva varsity softball team increased its record to 4-1 for the young season.

In the first game, the Ladybugs beat district foe Luther 3-0. Jaycee Kelln started the game on the mound for Alva and recorded 21 outs.

Kelln struck out 11 batters on the day. The starting pitcher also allowed zero hits and zero runs over seven innings while walking none.

Ladybug Softball got on the board in the bottom of the third inning after Cloé Lee grounded out, and Kelln doubled, each scoring one run.

Alayna Wiles took the loss for Luther. The starting pitcher went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out five and walking one.

Ruby Nichols led the Ladybugs with two hits in three at bats. Lee, Kelln, and Kaylen Woods each drove in one run for Alva.

Game 2: Luther Lions

In Game 2, the Ladybugs won big over the Luther Lions 9-1. The Ladybugs opened the scoring in the first after an error scored one run. A single by Avery McMurphy extended the Ladybugs lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.

Freshman Trinity Stevens stepped in the circle first for Ladybugs softball. The starting pitcher surrendered three hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out four and walking one.

Kylie Long started the game for the Luther Lions. The right-handed pitcher gave up nine hits and nine

runs (three earned) over seven innings, striking out four and walking one. Jaycee Kelln tossed two innings of shutout ball for the Ladybugs in relief. She gave up zero hits, striking out four and walking none.

McMurphy, the No. 7 hitter for Ladybugs softball, led the way with three runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. McMurphy and Ruby Nichols each collected two hits for Ladybugs softball. Kelln stole two bases, and the Ladybugs stole four bases on the game.

Hailey Kuhlman, Keke Burnham, and Anna Tytenicz each collected one hit for the Luther Lions fast pitch team.
