Ladybugs shutout Newkirk 8-0 Monday

Sophomore Asia Blackledge (19) slides safely into home plate, putting another run on the board Monday against the Newkirk Tigers. The Ladybugs took the game 6-0.

ALVA, Okla. – Coming off a 1-0 loss to the Pacers in Enid Friday, the Alva Ladybugs softball team returned home Monday to take on the Newkirk Lady Tigers.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Rien Buehrer doubled, scoring one run. Asia Blackledge, Avery McMurphy and Buehrer combined for four of Alva's eight hits in the victory.

Jaycee Kelln struck out 13 batters on the day. She also gave up one hit and zero runs over seven innings while walking two.

A little dirt never hurt, especially when you're stealing a base. Ladybug Rien Buehrer (21) does just that as she and her team take the win against the Newkirk Tigers on Monday.

Annalee Sewell took the loss for Newkirk Varsity Lady Tigers. She went two innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, striking out three and walking none. Aubrey Bradley stepped in the circle first for Newkirk. She allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out six and walking one.

Kaylen Woods had three hits in four at bats for the Ladybugs while Blackledge had two runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. Blackledge went two for three on the day. Buehrer collected two hits in three at bats.

The Ladybugs were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.

Jordyn Carleton went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Newkirk Varsity Lady Tigers in hits.

The Ladybug varsity softball team is playing in the Highway 81 Classic tournament this weekend with games set for Thursday through Saturday. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, they return home to host the Woodward Lady Boomers at 5 p.m.
