Ranger soccer wins home opener behind two second half goals

ALVA, Okla. – During their home opener Monday, the Northwestern soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second half following goals from Carlie Massingale and Isabella Mcmillian.

The win improves the Rangers to 1-2 on the season as Nebraska Kearney falls to 0-3 on the season.

In the opening half neither team was able to find the back of the net. The visiting Nebraska-Kearney was able to get the first shot at the nine minute mark that went high. Ranger goalkeeper Rachel Brown made her first save of the day on a shot from Perez for their second of the game.

The Rangers best opportunity in the first half came at the 24 minute mark putting up three shots in a minute. First, Elie Dang had a shot on frame which was saved by Mackenzie Smith, Nebraska Kearny's goalkeeper. Felicia Bueno followed with a shot that was saved before a second shot attempt went wide left.

Each team was able to get one more shot on goal before the end of the half. As the halftime score still stood at 0-0.

In the second half the Rangers had the first shot on goal from Adrianna Gutierrez which was saved by Smith, before two shots by Tiara Campbell went wide. Northwestern was able to find the back of the net first at the 58 minute mark as Isabella Mcmillan scored off a corner kick for her second goal of the season giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

After a few missed shot attempts the Rangers scored for a second time as Carlie Massingale scored off an assist from Dang for the Rangers' second goal of the afternoon and Massingale's first of the year.

A minute later Nebraska Kearney got on the board after a penalty kick goal from Cammie Davis to cut the Ranger lead in half 2-1 with 15 minutes left to play.

Nebraska Kearney was able to get two more shots off but both off target as the Rangers sealed their first victory of the season in a 2-1 win on Monday.

Northwestern will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 10, with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Northeastern State in Tahlequah before returning home against New Mexico Highlands on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m.
