October 8, 2023

The Alva Goldbugs spoiled homecoming for Blackwell fans Friday night with a near rout of the Maroons. It wasn’t until the end of the final quarter that Blackwell put anything on the scoreboard. Meanwhile the Goldbugs racked up 62 points to take a 62-8 win. Blackwell is now 0-6 for their season while Alva improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play.

Lantz Mathers made three touchdowns in the first half of play, one from a fumble recovery and two in rushing. The fumble recovery occurred in the first Maroon possession when quarterback Kruz Goff was hit and the ball popped out. Mathers gained possession and ran 30 yards for the TD. The Goldbugs led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. In his other two touchdowns, Mathers only had to cover one yard to score.

The Maroons helped out the score with a safety when Goff was tackled in the end zone.

The first half was nearly over when Goldbug quarterback Cambell Gaisford fumbled a snap and raced back to get the ball. He ran through defenders and made the touchdown. Kash Shipley’s point-after kicks added two more Goldbug points. Alva led 28-0 at halftime.

In the second half of play, Demarkus Wharton intercepted a pass and carried the ball nearly the length of the field to score. The next Alva TD came on a seven yard pass play from Gaisford to Daylon Malone. Shortly after, Gaisford connected with Aiden Kimberlin on another touchdown pass play. Alva was up 48-0 at the end of three quarters.

To open the final quarter, Gaisford again passed to Malone for a 3-yard touchdown. The score was now 55-0, and Goldbug players started coming in off the bench. Jantz Heaton made a second pick six play for Alva, incepting a pass and running 70 yards for a TD.

Blackwell finally scored on a 60 yard run by Jerry Jurney. They went for a successful two-point conversion. The quarter ended with Tucker Hannaford sacking the Maroon quarterback. The final was Alva 62, Blackwell 8.

Next up, the Goldbugs will travel to Chisholm to take on the Longhorns for a Thursday night fall break game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
