Reflection

October 13, 2023

What is light? Scientists really don’t know what light is, but we all know its many effects, and we know that it is radiation waves of different frequencies. However, what it is exactly cannot be truly explained as other things can be explained in science. We know that there could be no life on the earth without light.

What the sun is to the earth, Jesus Christ is to the spiritual world. What effect the sun has on nature is the effect Jesus has on our cold, lifeless and sinful natures. Jesus says, in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world.” Jesus provides for those who receive and accept Him. Just as God provided the daily manna to Israel on their wilderness journey, so Jesus provides for the soul-hunger of people today. Christ wants to turn His light on in our hearts. He wants us to be reflectors of His divine light. As we reflect this light that should reflect off a Christian, as the sun reflects off the moon, we will become witness to the difference God’s light makes in the people who possess Christ. As Christians, we have become His light in a dark world.

We need to remember and be honest with ourselves. To be a reflection of Jesus and to love like Him is not always easy or pleasant. Because of this sin in the world and in our lives as humans, Jesus is always working on us and our hearts. Like a surgeon, He cuts out all that is false and wrong in our lives. His scalpel cuts across all that is dishonest, unfair and unloving in our lives.

Isaiah said, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20). For this reason, Jesus plunged into the mire of our sin when He came into this world and shined His light onto us so that He might save us from sin. Then, He baptized us with the truth of His love that saves, disciplines and will bring us to Heaven someday.

What a wonderful thing to reflect. A reflection of the one who saves us and changes our lives so much that his love and goodness show others that we are a part of His family. John 13:34-35: “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

What would it be like to reflect Him so much that we each loved each other the same way? Jesus says that is what proves to the world that you are His disciples. If everyone did that, what would your life and the world look like?
