Applications are open for Alva School Board position

October 27, 2023

As the Alva School Board begins a superintendent search, they are also looking for people interested in filling a board seat.

At the special board meeting on Monday, Board President Jane McDermott reported that Larry Parker is resigning due to health reasons. “We are going to miss him dearly, especially his kind heart,” said McDermott. “It was nice to have an educator on the board.” Before serving on the school board, Parker worked in the school district as a speech pathologist and coach.

McDermott said the board has 60 days from the date of the meeting, Oct. 23, to appoint someone to fill the vacant seat. Parker filled Seat #5 on the board, and his term expires in 2025 so anyone appointed would serve a little over a year. The board will be accepting applications from those interested in the board position.

Interested applicants or those with questions are welcome to contact the Superintendent’s Office, 418 Flynn St., in Alva. Letters of interest will be accepted at the Superintendent’s Office until Dec. 1. People applying must live in the District #5 area. School district maps will be available at the office as well as on the district’s web page.

This is not an election. School board members will make the final decision on whom to appoint to the board.
