Ranger volleyball completes sweep over Savage Storm

DURANT – Northwestern Oklahoma State Volleyball was on the road Wednesday evening against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Rangers came out fast with an aggressive 3-0 dominating win finishing each set with at least a seven point win.

Northwestern snaps a three game losing streak with the loss improving to 10-16 overall on the season with a 6-9 Great American Conference record. The loss drops Southeastern Oklahoma State to 12-15 with a 7-8 GAC record.

Set One

Northwestern started the match with the first two points of the set as Ivanny Blackwood had the first kill followed by Storm attack error as Carmae Jones and Mariela Jimenez blocked the Storm attack.Northwestern then led 3-0 before Southeastern got on the board.

Northwestern continued to extend the lead as a kill by Erika Ascencio Soriano and blocks by Ozge Yavuz and Asencio Soriano had the Rangers in front 9-3. Blackwood then continued a strong opening set with three straight kills for the Rangers taking a 14-6 lead.

After a quick Southeastern run Northwestern slowed the Storm attack with another block, this time by Yavuz and Carmae Jones, taking a 18-9 lead. Southeastern had their best run after trailing 20-11 rattled off three straight and in total a 6-1 run before the Rangers called a timeout.

Northwestern closed the opening set win following the timeout after getting the first two points following kills from Macy Shreffler back-to-back before Mariela Jimenez closed out the set with a kill as the Rangers went up 1-0 in the match following a 25-18 set victory.

Set Two

Northwestern scored three straight after Southeastern scored the first point but Ivanny Blackwood tied the set before a service ace by Abby Davis pushed Northwestern in front.

The Rangers never lost the lead again in this set as Asencio Soriano had the next three Ranger points on kills helping the team hold the advantage. As Northwestern held a 9-8 advantage a Brianda Diaz service ace including two straight and two Storm errors had Northwestern in front 14-8.

Northwestern showed their depth following four straight kills to take a 18-9 lead on kills by four different players including Blackwood, Jones, Shreffler and Asencio Soriano.

The teams traded points as the Rangers continued to control the match, holding their lead to a 20-14 advantage in set two before three straight Asencio Soriano kills led to a 24-16 set lead and a Blackwood kill finished the 25-16 set victory, giving Northwestern a 2-0 match lead on the road.

Set Three

The Savage Storm opened the scoring in set three after a Ranger attack error. Northwestern answered back, though, firing off three straight points started by a kill by Macy Shreffler, her first of five kills in the set. Abby Davis finished off a service ace before a second kill by Shreffler had the Rangers up 3-1.

Mariela Jimenez was in the spotlight for the next Ranger run, starting it with a kill followed by a block by Jimenez. Rangers led 7-2. The Rangers continued to open their lead extending it to 11-3. Erika Asencio Soriano had two kills and an assisted block along with Ozge Yavuz.

The Rangers and Savage Storm went back and forth as the Rangers continued to hold the Storm in the distance as Carmae Jones had a kill before Jimenez continued her strong third set with a service ace for a 19-11 lead. After a Southeastern timeout Northwestern closed the set on a 6-1 run closing out the 25-14 win in set three and completing the sweep 3-0 over the Savage Storm. Lobb started the run with a service ace before three straight kills by Ascencio Soriano and a kill by Ivanny Blackwood sealed the win.

The Rangers finished off a sweep over Southeastern in the season series with the 3-0 win finishing 2-0 against the Savage Storm. Northwestern will close the regular season out against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday, Nov. 9, with the start time at 6:00 p.m.
