Lady Rangers basketball team opens home slate with big win

ALVA ̶ The first home game of the season for the Lady Rangers was against Kansas Christian College (KCC). Everyone enjoyed being on the floor, as every Lady Ranger scored a basket. Lady Rangers started off fast in the non-conference game with a 14-0 lead and it grew bigger with each quarter.

The win improves the Lady Rangers to 3-0 on the season starting with three straight wins for the second season in a row.

Scoring leaders for NWOSU were Payton Jones 14 pts, Nikaya Orange 14 and 9 rebounds, Faith Simpson 12 and 5 rebounds, Kynsey Dixon with 11, Mia Jones with 10 and 6 rebounds, T. Thomas with 7 assists and 4 pts. The Lady Rangers out rebounded KCC 51-26.

First Quarter

The Lady Rangers' Craig opened the game with a three-point jumper. Thomas followed with a bucket after the Rangers stole the ball. Payton Jones hit two free throws and a three to continue the lead. Camille Thomas followed with another bucket, forcing KCC to take a timeout. The Rangers started the game with a strong 14-0 run. Right after a timeout Carly made another three and a lay-up.

As the Falcons remained scoreless, Faith Simpson put her name on the board with her first points giving them a 23-0 lead. After five minutes of playing Melissah Henderson for KCC scored their first bucket of the game. Soon after, Falcons added three free throws to the scoreboard. After the first quarter the Lady Rangers led 38-5.

Second Quarter

To start the second quarter KCC hit their first three of the game. The Lady Rangers answered back with a 10-0 run, causing KCC to take their second timeout of the game. KCC's Sidnee Bergquist put another two points in her stats. Payton Jones hit two back-to-back threes and the score was 56-15. Lady Rangers had seven steals halfway into the quarter. Josena Frame knocked down her first three of the game and Kynsey Dixon answered with her first three.

Halftime

The Lady Rangers led 68-22 after the first half of the game. Leading scorers for the Rangers at half: Payton Jones with 14 (3-4 3-pointers), Faith Simpson with 12 and five rebounds, C. Thomas had nine and five rebounds, Carly Craig eight and four assists, and Paige Scott led in assists with five. Leading for KCC: S. Bergquist with 12 points and N. Metcalf with seven and seven rebounds.

Third Quarter

Nikaya Orange opened the second half with a put back and increased her points to six. Paige Scott followed up with her first three of the game. Syncere Harrod had back-to-back lay ups from the paint and two made free throws. Sidnee Bergquist made two free throws, the first points of the third quarter for KCC. Summaya Adigun had back-to-back lay ups and scored 4 points. Mia Jones hit a three with a foul and completed a four-point play. L. Ribo got a chance to score her first points when she was fouled, and made one out of two free throws. Mia Jones answered with her second three. Kynsey Dixon made her second three of the game and a fast-break layup in the next possession. The Rangers hit the century mark at the end of the third quarter, leading 104-25.

Fourth Quarter

Kansas Christian started the last quarter of the game with a mid-range jumper from L. Ribo. Syncere Harrod answered with two buckets in a row from the paint. KCC had their best quarter in the fourth quarter finishing with 25 points in the quarter. The Rangers finished the game with four players knocking down three 3-pointers in Chrissen Harland finishing with 11 points, Mia Jones 10 points, Kynsey Dixon nine points and Payton Jones.

The Rangers will be back in action on the road at Oklahoma Panhandle State this (Friday) evening. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Goodwell.
