Alva BOE invites public to participate in online survey

With superintendent search underway, board members seek community input

November 29, 2023

ALVA – The Alva Board of Education has launched an online survey on the district’s website (alvaschools.com) to gather public input as they begin the search for the district’s next superintendent. Alva board members, in partnership with the Oklahoma State School Boards Association, have created an online community survey to gain insight into what characteristics and experiences community members value in a superintendent.

According to Alva Board of Education President Jane McDermott, the community survey is a vital part of the superintendent search process, allowing the board to hear directly from stakeholders about the qualities they seek in their next school leader.

“One of our most important roles as school board members is selecting a superintendent who reflects the mission of not only our district, but our community,” McDermott said. “We hope you will take 15 minutes to complete the survey, which will help show us what experiences, leadership qualities and characteristics you want and need in a superintendent. We encourage everyone to participate in the survey and look forward to hearing from you.”

Parents, students, staff and community members can access the survey on the district’s website – alvaschools.com – until Friday, Dec. 15. Applications are currently being accepted for the Alva superintendent position. For more information about the position or to apply, visit ossba.org/alva. Applications will be accepted until Jan. 5.

Community Focus Group

The Alva Board of Education will also be hosting a community focus group on Monday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium (501 14th St.). Community members are invited to attend the face-to-face meeting where OSSBA representatives will share their role in the search process, as well as gather feedback about the characteristics and experiences Alva board members should seek in the district’s next school leader.

OSSBA has helped facilitate superintendent searches across the state, working with other school board associations throughout the country to ensure a competitive candidate pool. The non-profit organization has partnered with several Oklahoma school districts of all sizes to perform superintendent searches, including Bethany, Piedmont and Perkins-Tryon.

OSSBA assists districts with advertising openings, recruiting potential candidates, furnishing an online application management system, and providing guidance and support throughout the search process.
