Alva Ladybugs, Goldbugs have decisive wins at Newkirk

The Alva varsity basketball teams traveled to Newkirk Friday night and came home with victories. The Ladybugs are now 2-0 on the season while the Goldbugs have a 1-1 record.

Ladybugs vs Lady Tigers

The Ladybugs scored first as Carly Argo sank a three-pointer. The Lady Tigers scored eight points before the Alva girls could put anything through the hoop. Kylie Adair broke the drought with a trey, and Alva finished the first quarter leading 13-11.

From then on, the Ladybugs dominated the game, adding 22 points in the second quarter while holding Newkirk to two. At halftime, the score was 35-13.

The Lady Tigers managed five points in the third quarter, but the Ladybugs added 14 to lead 49-18 at the end of three. In the final period, younger Ladybugs rotated in, but Alva added 13 more to the scoreboard. Newkirk managed six points. The final was Alva 62, Newkirk 24.

Although they were playing without Lantz Mathers and Aiden Kimberlin, the Goldbugs dominated the Tigers for the entire game. Kash Shipley took the lead in scoring while Daylon Malone was active all over the floor. Other high scorers were Aiden Ruiz, Kyler Martin and Kellan Penco.

The Goldbugs jumped out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter. At halftime, the Goldbugs led 37-13.

Newkirk was nearly scoreless in the second half, but finally managed a three-pointer in the last minutes. The final was Alva 65, Newkirk 16.

Wrap-Up

The Alva teams will have their first home games of the young season on Tuesday, Nov. 5, as they take on the Blackwell Maroons. The girls' game tips off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.

The 3rd Annual Alva Shootout will begin on Thursday, Dec. 7, with games starting at 10 a.m. in the Alva gym. Brackets were expected to be released today, Dec. 3. Some teams were still competing in football playoffs causing a delay on scheduling.
