Alva hosts third Shootout over weekend

• Alva JV Ladybugs win 7th place

Alva/NWOSU shoot out was held this week at Alva High School where 16 teams take their shot at bringing home some gold.

The Third Annual Alva Shootout basketball tournament began Thursday morning at Alva High School. Sixteen teams from Oklahoma and Kansas, including three from Alva, met in games to test their abilities early in the season.

Thursday Games

On Thursday, the girls' contests began with Alva JV taking on Seiling, the top-ranked girls' team in the tournament. Seiling won that matchup 77-22. Jones took on Attica, Kansas, at 12:40 with Jones winning 66-33. Deer Creek and Pawhuska played the afternoon game with Deer Creek edging out the Lady Huskies 53-51. In the final girls' game of the day, the Alva Ladybugs took on Cimarron, Kansas. Alva won 69-29.

The boys' side of the bracket kicked off Thursday with Immanuel Lutheran playing Enid JV. Immanuel Lutheran won that contest 70-46. The Jones Longhorns met the Pawhuska Huskies with Jones winning 48-37. Later in the afternoon, Stillwater took on Cimarron, Kansas, with Stillwater winning 77-28. In the final game of the night, Alva met Attica, Kansas. The Alva Goldbugs won 71-29.

Friday Games

In Friday's girls' games, Alva JV Ladybugs played Pawhuska in the consolation bracket. Pawhuska won 47-17. The Attica Lady Bulldogs defeated the Cimarron Lady Blue Jays 43-40. On the winner's side of the girls' bracket, the Seiling Lady Wildcats defeated Deer Creek 69-28. The Alva Ladybugs had a nail-biter game against Jones with the Ladybugs winning 42-41. Deer Creek and Jones moved to the third place game on Saturday. The Alva Ladybugs were to face off with the Seiling Lady Wildcats in the championship Saturday night.

In Friday boys' games, Pawhuska defeated the Enid JV 44-34, and Cimarron beat Attica 54-31. The Enid JV Plainsmen played Attica, Kansas, for seventh place on Saturday. Pawhuska took on Cimarron, Kansas, in the consolation championship.

On the winner's side of the bracket, the Immanuel Lutheran Crusaders beat Jones 58-50, and the Stillwater Pioneers defeated the Alva Goldbugs 69-32. This sent Alva and Jones into the third-place game on Saturday. Immanuel Lutheran and Stillwater were slated for the Saturday night championship game.

In the first game Saturday morning, the Alva JV Ladybugs took on Attica, Kansas, for seventh place in the tournament. The Alva girls won the game 56-48. The Ladybugs trailed 12-11 at the end of the first quarter but outscored Attica 16-9 in the second. Alva led 27-21 at halftime. The Ladybugs dominated the third quarter with 18 points to just eight for the Lady Budlldogs. Alva's lead increased to 45-29 at the end of three quarters of play. In the final period Attica poured in 19 points to 11 for Alva, but it wasn't enough. The JV Ladybugs took the win 56-48.

Kambri Rhodes led the Alva scoring with 22 points. Madison Blocker had eight points while Kaylen Woods had seven. Trinity Stevens and Asia Blackledge had six apiece. Finishing out the scoring were Preslie Jones with five and Lyndee Fraire with two.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Zoie Redgate with 19 points followed by Cady Hamphill with 14. Baylee Ricke had seven while Peylyn Carlisle scored four points. Annamay Patterson and Libby Swingle had two points each.
