Goldbugs pull off win against Fairview

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the Alva Shootout, the Goldbugs had a few extra days of recovery time before taking on Fairview at home Thursday. The Alva boys tied the Yellowjackets at halftime but lost some ground in the third quarter. Fourth quarter scoring put the Goldbugs in the lead for a final win of Alva 48, Fairview 44.

The Goldbugs had a slow start to the game with only three players scoring as Fairview took the 16-9 first quarter lead. The Goldbugs fought back in the second quarter and tied the score at 24 going into the halftime break. The Yellowjackets came out of the break to score 15 points while Alva was held to eight. At the end of three quarters, Fairview led 39-32. The Goldbugs pulled out the 48-44 win with 16 points, half of them at the free throw line, while holding Fairview to just five in the final period.

Junior Kash Shipley had 22 points to lead the Alva scoring followed by senior Aiden Ruiz with 12. Kelan Penco scored six points, Cambell Gaisford had five, Cameron Longhurst had two and Kyler Martin one.

For the Yellowjackets, Reed Martens led with 14 points followed by Haddon Miller with 11. Brant Stader and Gauge Cottrill had seven each. Finishing out the scoring were Jax Bernard with three and Easton Hamar with two.

The Goldbugs traveled to Perry to take on the Maroons Friday night.
