Ladybugs have 46-37 win over Perry

After a Thursday night win against Fairview, the Alva Ladybugs traveled to Perry on Friday to take on the Lady Maroons. The Perry team proved to be a tougher opponent than Fairview, but Alva held their top scorer, Kennedy Hight to just five points, winning 46-37.

The score was close at the end of the first quarter with Alva holding the 17-15 advantage. The second quarter was the only time the Lady Maroons took the lead.

By halftime, the Ladybugs had increased their lead to five at 29-24. The third quarter was a defensive show with Alva held to eight points while Fairview managed only four. The Ladybugs still held the lead at 37-28. In the final period, both teams scored nine points to finish with Alva winning 46-37.

First Half

Lakin Gaddy put the first points on the board for Alva with a two-point stick-back followed by a three-pointer from a Morgan Heath assist. Gaddy continued to dominate the first quarter scoring for Alva with seven points. Kylie Adair had a couple of nice baskets. Jaycee Kelln and Asia Blackledge contributed a basket each while Hadlee Ohm earned two points at the free throw line. Hight was held to one free throw point in the first quarter, but three Lady Maroons hit treys to keep the score close. Sarah Davison had six points in the quarter while Emery Halford scored her only points of the game off a trey. The score was tied at 15 near end of the quarter but a Ladybug basket gave Alva the edge at 17-15.

Lady Maroon Davison scored on a layup to open the second quarter, tying the score. Heath answered with a running basket. Two points by Hight and three from Alliyah Shrum gave Perry a three point edge at 22-19. Kylie Adair scored, but Davison also hit a basket to keep the Lady Maroon lead. Ohm scored off the glass and was fouled. Her free throw missed, but she followed with another basket off the glass to take back the lead at 25-24. As Ohm tried for another shot, she was fouled and made both points. Ohm finished out the quarter with an offensive rebound and stick-back to give the Ladybugs a 29-24 lead at halftime.

Second Half

The third quarter was a defensive battle with both teams having trouble getting baskets. Most of the scoring came from three-point range. Kelln scored the first trey of the quarter for Alva followed by a three from Davison for Perry. Davison went to the free throw line and made one of two shots. Kelln scored off a stick-back, and Carly Argo finished out the quarter with a three-pointer. The Ladybugs led 37-28 at the end of three quarters.

Porter started off the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets. Argo sank a three-pointer. Then Hight scored to put Perry back within six at 40-34. After that all the scoring came at the free throw line. Gaddy went to the charity stripe three times and scored a total of six points. Davison was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all of her charity attempts. The final score was Alva 46, Perry 37.

Wrap-Up

The Ladybug scoring was led by Gaddy with 13 points followed by Ohm with 10. Kelln had seven points while Argo and Adair finished with six points apiece. Heath and Blackledge had two points each.

For Perry, Davison led with 17 points followed by Porter with five. Hight who has been averaging 22 points a game was held to just five. Shrum and Halford had three points each.

The Alva Ladybugs are now 7-1 on the season while Perry falls to 6-2. After the holiday break, the Ladybugs will travel to Blackwell on Tuesday, Jan. 2. The Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm follows Jan. 4-6.
