Freedom, Waynoka show increases in sales tax collections

In the Dec. 8, 2023, distribution of sales tax collections by the Oklahoma Tax Commission, Freedom and Waynoka showed increases compared to December 2022.

Freedom received $2,591.71 compared to $2,155.60 a year ago, an increase of about 20 percent. The Town of Freedom does not receive use tax.

Waynoka was up five percent compared to sales tax collections in December 2022. This month the city received $63,528.90 compared to $60,189.16 in 2022. However, use tax collections were down. This month use tax received was $26,023.87 compared to $62,894.72 last year. When totaling sales and use tax, Waynoka had a decrease of 27 percent compared to last year.

Alva received $376,618.12 in sales tax during December, down from the $383,668.30 in December 2022, a decrease of two percent. Use tax collections showed a bigger gap with Alva receiving $36,599.19 this month compared to $50,684.49 in December 2022. When sales and use tax are totaled, the decrease from last year is five percent.

Woods County showed a decrease in both sales and use tax. In sales tax the county received $75,021.49 this month compared to $84,830.44 in 2022, a decrease of 12 percent. Use tax dropped from $18,931.17 in December last year to $16,240.08 this month. Overall, the county received a total of $19,261.57 in sales and use tax. Compared to last year’s total, that is still a decrease of 12 percent.

The December distribution primarily represents local tax receipts from October business. Companies that remit more than $2,500 monthly in sales tax receipts are required to file and pay electronically. The monies they reported this period represent sales from October 16th to 31st and estimated sales from November 1st to the 15th.

The disbursement of $ 196,553,716 in sales tax collections returned to Oklahoma cities and towns reflected a decrease of $ 905,686 from the $ 197,459,402 distributed to them in December last year. The use tax disbursement to cities and towns was $ 38,996,930.

In county returns, the counties shared in $ 32,375,587 sales tax disbursements and $ 7,435,286 in use tax disbursements.
