Goldbugs defeat Woodward to take third in Wheat Capital

On Saturday the Alva Goldbugs played Woodward and won, 60-53, earning them third place in the 2024 Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm.

Despite an easy start in the first round of the Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm last week, the Alva Goldbugs ran into trouble against the Jones Longhorns. The loss to Jones pitted the Goldbugs against the Woodward Boomers for third place. The teams were evenly matched, but the Goldbugs pulled out a win to take the third place trophy.

Goldbugs vs Perry

The Goldbugs drew the Perry Maroons for the first round of the tournament. A lot of Goldbugs got on the scoreboard, and they easily won 66-34.

In his first varsity start, freshman Connor Adair led the Goldbugs with 12 points, all from three-point baskets. Kash Shipley had 11 points and Aiden Kimberlin 10. Aiden Ruiz and Kyler Martin made eight points each while Kelan Penco had three. Daylon Malone, Cambell Gaisford, Jantz Heaton and Maddox Beck each scored two points.

Goldbugs vs Jones

In the semifinals Friday, the Goldbugs took on the Jones Longhorns. In a low-scoring first quarter, Jones led 6-3. By halftime, Jones had built a 17-9 lead. Despite out-scoring Jones in the third quarter, the Goldbugs still lagged 23-17. The final score was Jones 42, Alva 29.

Kash Shipley led the Alva scoring with nine points followed by Aiden Kimberlin with eight and Daylon Malone with seven. Aiden Ruiz had three points and Connor Adair two.

Creighton Jones led the Longhorns with 13 points while Riley Ellefson and Brinlee Sander had eight each. Acyn Hansen and Michael Gaul each had four points followed by Gage Jack with three and Jayden Nathan with two.

After the slower-paced game against Jones on Friday, the Goldbugs were in a race to the basket against Woodward. The Boomers edged Alva 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, but the Goldbugs pulled ahead 29-28 at halftime. Alva outscored Woodward by five points in the third period to lead 49-43. In the final quarter, Woodward couldn't make up the difference. Alva won 60-53 to take the third place trophy.

Kash Shipley had a big 27 points to lead the Goldbugs in scoring followed by Aiden Kimberlin with 16. Aiden Ruiz had eight points, Daylon Malone had five and Trace Hamilton four.

Ben Cheap led Woodward with 12 points followed closely by Carter Reed with 11. Ethen Neill and Aaron Laredo each had seven while Isaiah Washington had six. Connor Sunderland and Gage Hutchens each had five.

The Alva Goldbugs will be at home tonight, Jan. 12, as they play host to the Chisholm Longhorns following the girls' varsity game.
