Goldbugs add wins against Cashion, Tonkawa

In the past week, the Alva Goldbugs tucked two more wins under their belts as they played Cashion and Tonkawa.

On Friday, Jan. 26, the Goldbugs traveled to Enid for the Skordle Festival where they met the Class 2A Cashion Wildcats. The scrappy Wildcats kept the Goldbugs on their toes in the high-scoring first quarter. Alva finished leading 23-15. The second quarter was more of a defensive battle with the Goldbugs managing only six points while Cashion had five. The Goldbugs led 29-20 at the break. During the third period, both teams scored 15 points with Alva maintaining a 44-35 lead. The Wildcats fought hard in the fourth, but they could never get closer than four points, and Alva won 56-50.

Kash Shipley led the Goldbugs in scoring with 21 points followed by Aiden Ruiz with 16. Daylon Malone and Kelan Penco had five points each. Aiden Kimberlin scored four points with Connor Adair making three and Lantz Mathers 2.


Drake Woody was the only Wildcat in double figures with 16. Anthony Wilburn had eight and Cole Tichenor had seven. Kamden Miller and Nathan Nabavi had six apiece. Finishing out the scoring were Carson Gump with four and Brody Nichols with three.

Goldbugs vs Tonkawa

On Tuesday, the Goldbugs traveled to Tonkawa to play the Buccaneers. It was a high-scoring game with Alva dominating all the way. The Goldbugs led 23-6 in the first quarter and 43-24 at halftime. In the third quarter the Goldbugs increased their lead to 30 points, finishing 67-37. The final score was Alva 82, Tonkawa 49.

The Goldbugs were a perfect 11 of 11 at the free throw line. Aiden Kimberlin and Kash Shipley led the scoring with 17 points each. Daylon Malone and Aiden Ruiz followed with 14 points apiece. Camball Gaisford and Trace Hamilton each had six points. Lantz Mathers scored four points with Connor Adair and Maddox Beck making two points each.


The Buccaneers were led by Cooper Braden with 13 points followed by Dominick Bryan with 12 and Westyn Freeman with 11.

The Goldbugs are now 13-6 on the season. Tonight, Feb. 2, the Goldbugs play host to the Frontier Mustangs in a homecoming game. The crowning ceremony starts at 5:45 p.m. During the break following the girls' varsity game, seniors will be recognized.

Next Tuesday, Feb. 6, Alva travels to Woodward. The final game of the regular season is at Hooker on Monday, Feb. 12.
