Burlington's Colton Hess and Cherokee's Kai McHenry face off in the final jump in a 4-minute overtime in the final high school game held in Burlington's gymnasium.

Burlington community members fondly remembered their current basketball gymnasium during the last home games and final senior night held in the facility on Monday, Feb. 5. The gymnasium was built in 1948. Many students have learned and enjoyed the sport of basketball in its 76-year history. Many of those students also experienced success within its walls which are adorned with flags of past glories.

Spectators had the opportunity to watch the small but determined Lady Elks and Elks against the Cherokee Chiefs. The Elks put forth an incredible end of the season game, going into overtime with a score of 52-52. The scoreboard shoed only 1:04 left in the overtime match up and a score of 53-53, and hardly a soul was seated or thinking of the old concrete benches as they cheered for the Elks. With only 31 seconds left, Cherokee managed to put up a three and earned a foul basket resulting in a 53-57 game.

Playing a Class A team at least two to three times deep, Burlington's Class B team, coached by Gerrett Spears, put forth a valiant effort worthy of the gymnasium's long history. The students, staff and community members are excited to start next year's season in the new state-of-the art gymnasium and community fitness center. Thankful for its past, Burlington looks toward the future with excitement as it bridges the old with the new.
