Alva Ladybugs defeat Newkirk, Hooker

• Host Chisholm Saturday in district playoff

The Alva Ladybugs dominated the Newkirk Lady Tigers in a makeup game played Thursday, Feb. 8, in Alva. The Ladybugs came out strong and never let up, holding Newkirk to one point in the first quarter and none in the second.

The Ladybugs led 19-1 at the end of the first quarter and 35-1 going into the halftime break. The Lady Tigers finally managed to hit the basket in the third quarter with ten points, but Alva led 47-11 as that quarter ended. The final was Alva 55, Newkirk 17.

Coach Jeremy Jones emptied the bench to give all the Ladybugs time on the court. Scoring was spread over a large number of players. Jaycee Kelln led the way with 15 points, all made in the first half. She was followed by Lakin Gaddy with eight and Kaylen Woods with six. Kylie Adair had five points, Hadlee Ohm four, and Morgan Heath three. Channing Ferguson, Kambri Rhodes, Mya Williams, Myah Graves and Lyndee Friday each had two points. Trinity Stevens and Madison Blocker each scored one.

The Lady Tigers were led by Nicole Free who had nine points followed by Payton Banister with four. Tayton Voegele and Madalyn Hutchason had two points each.

Ladybugs vs Hooker

On Monday, the Ladybugs traveled to Hooker to take on the Lady Bulldogs in the final game of the regular season. The very physical Lady Bulldogs were competitive, but Alva pulled ahead in the first quarter and continued to lead throughout the game.

Alva led 15-6 at the end of the first period and 27-17 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Ladybugs scored 15 points to seven for Hooker for a 42-24 advantage going into the final period. Both teams scored seven points in the fourth, and Alva won 49-31.

Lakin Gaddy had a big 20 points to lead the Ladybugs followed by Jaycee Kelln with ten and Kylie Adair with seven. Channing Ferguson, Kaylen Woods and Hadlee Ohm each scored four points. The Ladybugs went to the free throw line only once where Adair made both shots.

Hooker was led by Izabella Neville and Rubi Hernandez with eight points each. Devry Metcalf had seven points, Crisbel Rios six and Anadailee Deherra two.

District Game

Class 3A District playoffs are this weekend. The Alva Ladybugs have a 20-3 overall record with 7-0 in district play. The Ladybugs will host the Chisholm Lady Longhorns Saturday night in the Alva High School gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Win or lose, both teams will advance to regionals. On Thursday, Feb. 22, at Chisholm the winner will play Rejoice Christian at 6 p.m. Rejoice Christian did not draw an opponent in the district playoffs. The loser of Saturday's game between Alva and Chisholm will have a bye in the first round of regionals and will move into the consolation bracket on Friday at 1 p.m. in Perry.
