Greenleaf firefighter seriously injured in Ellis County

A firefighter from Alva was seriously injured while part of a Woods County strike force assisting in fighting the Ellis County wildfire. The injury resulted from a collision of two trucks at 12:36 p.m. Wednesday approximately 10 miles north of Gage.

Glenn Cushenbery, 59, of Alva, was driving a 2007 Freightliner tanker truck from the City of Alva Fire Department southbound on South County Road 184. The vehicle was stopped attempting to make a left turn into a field.

Jeffery Bush, 48, of Alva, driving a brush pumper fire truck from Greenleaf Fire Department, came over the top of a hill and struck the tanker truck. The impact collision caused Ronald Vasquez, 21, of Alva, to be pinned between the pumper tank and the cab of the Greenleaf truck. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, the view was obscured.

Vasquez was transported by Ellis County EMS approximately one mile to the landing zone for Air-Evac. He was then flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he was admitted in stable condition with trunk internal injuries. Neither of the truck drivers was injured.

Vasquez has a fractured pelvis and is facing surgery, according to a posting on the Greenleaf Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page. A love fund has been established at Alva State Bank to accept donations at any one of their branches. Monetary donations may also be sent via CashApp to $RVasq2. The family will need money for travel to Oklahoma City and for hotel rooms. Check the Greenleaf Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page for information.
