On November 3, 1930, Charlotte Marie Edwards was born to Joseph Edwards and Clara Edwards (Howard) in Wichita, Kansas.

Charlotte was raised in Alva, Oklahoma, and lived there until she graduated from Alva High School in 1948.

Charlotte attended UCLA in California where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with an English major. After moving back to Alva briefly, Charlotte and her husband George Burnett along with the three boys moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in December of 1959. It was described as one of the worst snowstorms to hit Colorado Springs in quite a while.
