Rangers wait in line to get to their seats at the start of Northwestern's graduation Saturday.

Despite thunderstorms during the night, the 125th Spring Commencement at Northwestern Oklahoma State University was held outdoors on Saturday morning, May 4. Temperatures were chilly under an overcast sky as the Class of 2024 filed into Ranger Stadium for the ceremony as the university band, directed by Eric Burger, played the processional. Steve Hamm, minister of the College Hill Church of Christ, gave the invocation.

NWOSU President Dr. Bo Hannaford welcomed the graduates and guests. Citing Walt Disney, who said "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them," Hannaford said he believed this quote could be attributed to one's work ethic.

"As a student at Northwestern, you not only completed your degree but you probably held a job while doing it, or maybe played a sport, or participated in fine arts or were involved in the many student organizations and clubs we have here at Northwestern. Whatever the case may be, you have developed a work ethic that will take you into your next phase of life. At Northwestern we have taken great pride in helping you to pursue your dreams, and today you are turning your dreams into reality."

He introduced the speaker Mark Brace, a 1982 graduate of NWOSU, who is now president of Bank First at Lawton.

Brace said as he thought about topics for his speech, he decided to talk about something he knows: investments. However, his friends told him to stay away from the topics of politics, religion and money. Instead of financial investments, he chose to talk about other types of investments.

• Create a return on your investment. He told graduates they had invested in themselves by obtaining a degree. He encouraged them to continue learning. "Continue to invest in yourself and believe in yourself," he said.

• Invest in others. Brace asked the graduates to think of all the mentors in their lives, giving their time and expertise. "Return the favor of those who invested in you," he said.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University held its 125th Spring Commencement on the university's football field Saturday morning.

• Balance your time, energy and talents. "This one's tricky," said Brace. He recommended considering how much time you devote to investing in self, in family and in community. He quoted Albert Einstein who said, "Strive not to be a success but rather of value."

The Class of 2024 was presented by Dr. James Bell, vice president of academic affairs. As their names were called, students crossed the stage to be presented with their degrees by Dr. Hannaford while their families applauded and cheered.
