  • Suffering

John Clapp, Pastor of Bible Baptist Church|Mar 24, 2017

The oldest book of the Bible addresses the singular aspect that all humanity faces: that of suffering. The ancient poem of Job addresses human suffering on a level that few would ever experience. The Book of Job opens with, “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil” (Job 1:1). We are introduced to a man who loved God, and lived his faith out in his daily life. Beautiful family, successful in life, healthy; but that would change suddenly. By the tim...

Nowadays, researching your family tree is much e...

  • Fasts

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Mar 24, 2017

For the last couple of months, I have been pretty faithfully sticking to my low-carb diet. So far, the occasional chip or French fry (just one to quell the craving) has been the only obvious excursion from the plan. Since I’m not a man given to sweating the tiny details, I’m sure that I’ve fallen victim to the dreaded “hidden carbs” they talk about in the magazines, but all in all I’m happy with my performance and will soon have to buy a new belt (yay me). Unfortunately, as a result of this journey of self-denial, I have gained zero new in...

The Alva Municipal Cemetery is receiving a facelift beginning this week. Cemetery Board Member Arden Chaffee presented a report to the Alva City Council Monday. He said during the board's March 8 meeting they approved plans for improving the main entrance to the cemetery using the $7,500 in this year's budget. Work began this week on the main (east) entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery budget will allow for about 60 feet of eight-inch-thick concrete for the main entrance off Flynn Street,...

  • New drug dog on duty

    Marione Martin|Mar 24, 2017

Alva Police Officer Kris Franta, who recently returned to the police department, owns “Gator,” a Belgian Malinois trained in drug detection, apprehension, tracking and article searches. City Business Manager Joe Don Dunham said the local police department will commission Gator and Officer Franta will recertify in Oklahoma as a handler. Franta will retain owner...

    Lynn L. Martin|Mar 24, 2017

Kevin O'Brien, chief financial officer, said this is the first time all three entities have made a profit in the same month. The best news is the recovery of the bank accounts. At the end of September, SMC had only $74,399 in the bank. Expense reduction efforts were again implemented, along with an increase in winter illnesses, and by the end of February, the facilities...

  • Transhumanism

    Arden Chaffee|Mar 24, 2017

The Six Million Dollar Man, Steve Austin, was superhuman, due to bionic implants. Bionic means having artificial body parts – specifically electro-mechanical ones. My father took advantage of a pacemaker for his heart – an electrode in the ventricle to steady the beat. It monitored activity and adjusted the pace automatically. Robotics are now used to articulate artificial limbs and have found some use in allowing paraplegics to be ambulatory. Insulin pumps dispense automatically and on-...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Barbara Thornberry Duncan|Mar 24, 2017

(Editor’s Note: The following is a tribute to longtime educator Lee Haley of Alva whose funeral was held recently.) He was a teacher who cared for his students and their success. A case in point: when I was in sixth grade at the Washington Elementary School in Alva, Mr. Haley was my sixth-grade teacher. He began noticing that I was losing my vision and could not read the blackboard. He allowed me to move closer to the board. After a while, l was unable to read. Mr. Haley became concerned. He permitted my friend Rita Arndt to sit with me and r...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Mar 24, 2017

Every spring, as April approaches, my thoughts (and those of other U.S. historians) are inevitably drawn to an examination of the Civil War. That bloody confrontation began and ended in April. The first shots were fired in South Carolina on April 12, 1861, and the South surrendered to the North in Virginia on April 9, 1865. In between those dates, over 620,000 young men (fully two percent of the U.S. population) died on the battlefields of America’s most divisive and bloodiest conflict. T...

  • Series Preview: Rangers look to continue the fight

    NWOSU Sports Information|Mar 24, 2017

One of the many definitions of the term “fight” is to endeavor vigorously in the pursuit of winning. Head Ranger softball coach Jill Webb repeatedly used that term when referring to how her team responded to a long weekend against a quality opponent this weekend at the Alva Rec Complex. That same vigorous pursuit will be relied on heavily as the Rangers face off against the No. 3-ranked team in the country this weekend in Magnolia, Arkansas, in the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders. The Rangers kept the momentum rolling under interim head coach...

Game 1 Coming off her incredible no-hitter performance on Friday, Madison Garza took to the circle looking to shut down the Arkansas-Monticello offense for a second straight day. But the Blossoms weren't about to let her get away...
