  • Oklahoma officer to face trial for fatal shooting

    Sep 23, 2021

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma district judge has ruled a suburban Oklahoma City police officer will face trial for the fatal shooting of a man who refused to drop a baseball bat as he approached the officer. The Village officer Chance Avery is charged with second-degree murder, or in the alternative, first-degree manslaughter in the July 2020 shooting death of Christopher Pool. District Judge Cindy Truong on Tuesday reversed an earlier ruling by Special Judge Lisa Hammond that prosecutors did not present evidence that Avery committed a c...

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita police made an arrest following the late-night stabbing death of a man inside a home, authorities there said. Officers were called shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday to a home along North Glenn and found 67-year-old Kurt Petersen suffering from several stab wounds, police said in a news release. Petersen was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said Petersen's caretaker had called 911 after stopping by the house to check on Petersen and finding him on the kitchen floor with injuries. Officials said another man, 6...

  • College Football Picks: Neutral sites for 2 ranked matchups

    RALPH D. RUSSO|Sep 23, 2021

Last week, college football gave fans one of its tastiest, and unfortunately rare, treats when Auburn visited Penn State. Good teams. Great setting. Entertaining game. What college football is all about. This week, not so much. The weekend's two matchups of ranked teams — No. 12 Notre Dame vs. No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 7 Texas A&M vs. No. 16 Arkansas — are both being played at NFL stadiums a long way from campus. Sigh. The Irish and Badgers are playing the back half of a two-game series that was supposed to start last year with a game at Lam...

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita man is facing eight counts related to his participation in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Michael Eckerman, 37, was arrested and charged Tuesday after federal authorities said he went inside the Capitol building and at one point pushed a Capitol police officer in order to allow protesters to move farther into the building while Congress was meeting to certify Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential race. Eckerman made his first court appearance in federal court in Wichita on T...

  • R. Kelly says he won't testify at his sex trafficking trial

    TOM HAYS|Sep 23, 2021

NEW YORK (AP) — R. Kelly told a judge on Wednesday that he won't take the witness stand at his sex trafficking trial, meaning he'll avoid the risk of a potentially brutal cross-examination. "You don't want to testify, correct?" U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly asked the R&B singer. He responded: "Yes, ma'am." Lawyers had already said Kelly was unlikely to testify in his own behalf. The defense is now expected to rest its case later Wednesday, clearing the way for the start of closing arguments. The short defense case has relied on a handful o...

  • Apple, Google raise new concerns by yanking Russian app

    MICHAEL LIEDTKE and BARBARA ORTUTAY|Sep 23, 2021

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Big Tech companies that operate around the globe have long promised to obey local laws and to protect civil rights while doing business. But when Apple and Google capitulated to Russian demands and removed a political-opposition app from their local app stores, it raised worries that two of the world's most successful companies are more comfortable bowing to undemocratic edicts — and maintaining a steady flow of profits — than upholding the rights of their users. The app in question, called Smart Voting, was a tool...

  • Officials: Many migrants from border camp staying in US

    ELLIOT SPAGAT and MARIA VERZA|Sep 23, 2021

DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — Many Haitian migrants camped in a small Texas border town are being released in the United States, two U.S. officials said, undercutting the Biden administration's public statements that the thousands in the camp faced immediate expulsion. Haitians have been freed on a "very, very large scale" in recent days, according to one U.S. official who put the figure in the thousands. The official, who has direct knowledge of operations, was not authorized to discuss the matter Tuesday and spoke on condition of anonymity. Many h...

    LISA MASCARO and KEVIN FREKING|Sep 23, 2021

WASHINGTON (AP) — Time growing shorter, President Joe Biden planned to meet privately Wednesday with House and Senate Democrats as Congress worked to bridge party divisions over his big "build back better" agenda ahead of crucial voting deadlines. The meetings at the White House come at a pivotal juncture for Biden's $3.5 trillion package as lawmakers struggle to draft the ambitious effort.
