John: Encouraging the good, warning against the evil

The writings of 2nd and 3rd John give us a glimpse into the close-knit community of believers near the end of the first century. The elder (older) John sends these short missives (only 27 verses combined) to encourage the good and warn against the evil that surrounded these Christians.
In the document we call 1st John, the recipient is called “the elect lady” (some translations use the word “chosen”) and her children. Most scholars believe John is directing his letter to a local church (“chosen lady” would fit, since the church is the bride of Christ). The children, then, would be the members...
