Every two years we go through an agonizing ritual in this country known as a national election. And even though this spectacle is an essential exercise in a democracy, most Americans are glad when it’s over.

In every other national election (like the one in 2016) we elect a president. In all national elections we elect every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and one-third of the members of the U.S. Senate.
