Right to Farm or Right to Harm?

Among a number of State Questions on this year’s ballot will be SQ 777, which supporters have dubbed “Right to Farm” and detractors “Right to Harm.” Who is right?

If passed, SQ 777 would put into the Oklahoma Constitution a ban on any new law regulating or prohibiting agricultural practices unless such regulation is shown to have a “compelling state interest.” North Dakota passed similar legislation in 2012 and Missouri in 2014, but neither state’s constitutional change included the compelling state interest language.
