Braggin' on the Bible Chair

November 4, 2016

I don’t spend a lot of time writing about my experiences with the Bible Chair ministry, though the “BC” is truly one of the main reasons we returned to Alva after a seven-year absence. However, this weekend was so jam-packed with Chair events, I thought I would spend just a moment or two bragging on the program.

In 2017, the Bible Chair will turn 50 years old. During that time, the organization has been a fixture on the campus at NWOSU, often supplying teachers in the religion and humanities classes. Many of our students and interns have gone on to serve Churches of Christ as ministers, worship leaders, elders and deacons.

Saturday morning was an early start, as we manned a table in The Pit for Ranger Connection. Once again, the recruitment staff did an outstanding job of filling the gym with potential students. Some take the time to stop by and visit (especially if Mom and Dad are with them). Representatives from the BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministries), the Wesley House and the Bible Chair are lined up and ready to encourage their attendance at devotionals, Bible studies and worship opportunities. But would you believe ... they seem to get really interested when we talk about that FREE FOOD!

Sunday afternoon, I had the honor of meeting several new friends as the Bible Chair enjoyed our annual pumpkin carving and fellowship (this year we were hosted by Josh and Cindy Tomberlin). The weather was outstanding! The food was fantastic! And the chance to enjoy the company of fellow Rangers was a real autumn “treat.” The Bible Chair intern, Blaine Tomberlin, did another great job of getting things together.

Monday, so far, has been another great day at the Bible Chair. After teaching philosophy class this morning – we’re currently studying ethics and morals, so I’m in my element – I hot-footed it to the College Hill Church of Christ for some lunch. We feed about 50 students each Monday, and were hosted this week by the North Garland Church of Christ from Enid. Perhaps you can see why I love my job?

Ride Rangers Ride and see you Sunday.
