This scene of eight downed poles blown over by fierce winds west of Burlington is the source of why Kiowa, Kansas, had no electricity most of Christmas Day.

Christmas day around noon the sky to the west of Kiowa, Kansas, was dark. The darkness came through with such high winds from the southwest that Christmas decorations literally flew out of yards; the roof at the old Tucker building on Main Street now occupied by a Bogner business blew off partially as did the roof at The Corner Stop convenience store. Limbs from bare trees blew everywhere. The extent of damage has not yet been determined.

The warm weather, near 60 degrees, brought thunderstorms and even tornadoes in some neighboring areas to the west and north.
