From fireworks to rodeos, Alva's third quarter was full of events

Woods County Sheriff Rudy Briggs was inducted into the Oklahoma Sheriff's Hall of Fame at Oklahoma Sheriff's Association annual conference held in Norman on July 28. Since 2001, only 22 other sheriffs have received this honor. Sheriff Briggs has faithfully served the citizens of Woods County since 1994 and continues his service to this day. Looking back at the third quarter of 2016, we see 4th of July celebrations, thunder and wind storms, the county fair, rodeos, and back to school.

July opened the fiscal year for most governmental bodies. Shelley Reed won the Woods County Clerk seat after defeating Kim Goucher in the Republican primary. Three other county incumbents were unopposed. They were Sheriff Rudy Briggs Jr., County Court Clerk Staci Davey and District 2 Commissioner Randy McMurphy.

The Alva Hospital Authority announced that a new physician would begin seeing patients in August. Dr. Michael Lawrence began on Aug. 11...
