Austin and Marlo Smith awoke early Friday morning to the smell of smoke. Reports say flames were discovered in the chicken coop just behind their home. Austin attempted to put the flames out with a fire extinguisher but the fire was too much. It quickly spread to the house, and Austin and Marlo hurriedly gathered their six-year-old son and family pets. They called the local fire department and escaped to the Woodard home nearby. The Smith home and everything in it is gone.

"Hey guys I want you to know how much your support means to me and my family. We are doing ok.

The Austin and Marlo Smith home in Freedom goes up in flames Friday morning. The fire started in a chicken coop and quickly spread to the house.

Eventually we'll need everything. But right now we are doing ok. Lots of (people) have been bringing us stuff. Mom had a couple sets of Jimmie's clothes at her house, where we are staying now. We've not had time to go through the clothing we've received. I bought socks and underwear; many friends and neighbors have brought toiletries, food and donations.

The majority of our shoes and some coats (because they were by the front door) were saved by my fellow firefighters.

Freedom EMS was on the scene and helped me breathe after too much smoke.

A chili benefit luncheon/fundraiser has been scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8, at noon in the Freedom School cafeteria; followed by a silent dessert/miscellaneous auction.
