Storm brings more rain than ice

Rain and freezing temperatures combine to produce icicles on trees in Alva Sunday afternoon, Jan. 15.

The massive ice storm predicted for northwest Oklahoma wasn't quite as dire as weathercasters warned. After testing or buying new generators, stocking up on essential food supplies and filling vehicle tanks with fuel, residents were relieved to see that ice accumulations didn't reach the levels predicted in Woods and Alfalfa counties in Oklahoma.

The moisture fell mainly as rain instead of sleet, freezing on grass, trees and power lines but melting as temperatures hovered just around the freezing mark and above. There were plenty of broken tree limbs, but streets and highways didn't get as sli...
