Paintings by Graham Edwards are on display this month during Graceful Arts Gallery's pop culture focus. Edwards, from Oklahoma City, is self-taught and describes his work as a cross between pop art and op art.

Beginning with an interest in M.C. Escher, Graham Edwards has developed a style all his own. Edwards is showing a dozen of his paintings this month at Graceful Arts Gallery in downtown Alva.

As he focused on the artist's work, Edwards learned the huge size of some of Escher's paintings. "Just the math of it got me involved, and I started drawing patterns and realized I could integrate other stuff with those patterns," he said. "It's just blossomed since then. I've always drawn, and now I'm just taking it to bigger levels."

Edwards says he is self-taught, although he did take an art class in high school. "I'm not sure if I finished," he commented wryly.

"Very bright, very colorful, there are lots of clean lines," Edwards says in describing his paintings. He pays close attention to detail and spends lots of time on his paintings. As for his particular style, "I'd say it's a mixture of pop art and op art. I think it's a very bright, colorful, contemporary style."

Artist Graham Edwards of Oklahoma City is showing a dozen of his colorful paintings at the Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva during March.

He has lived in Oklahoma City about 14 years but spent the first 19 years of his life in Muskogee.

Edwards was working at a desk job and doing art commissions at the same time. His employer went out of business, and he reached a decision point. Though he could have looked for another job in the same field, "I chose painting full time. I've been doing that ever since." He says he's the happiest he's ever been.

Two of Edwards' paintings from the Alva display are headed to Washington, D.C. in April. He was invited to include three of his works in a silent auction there. He says the third painting for the show is "still in progress but almost done."
