2017 Northwest Oklahoma Regional Science Fair a success

March 19, 2017

Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) hosted the annual regional science fair March 2 at NWOSU's Alva campus. According to Dr. Steven J. Maier, associate professor of physics and chair of the Department of Natural Science at NWOSU, the university hosted the first regional science fair in 1957. According to NWOSU's regional science fair website, program has evolved since 1957 to become one of outreach and service learning, and has served as a springboard for aspiring students.

A Little More History

“Dating back to the first Northwest Oklahoma Regional Science Fair in 1957,” reads an award letter provided by Maier, “Jerry Kudlac of Enid earned the honor of Grand Champion as a senior in Division I with a project demonstrating and explaining the reproduction of bread mold. Brian Johnston of Woodward earned the title of Grand Champion for Division II with his project titled 'Repulsion Coil to Demonstrate Lenz’s Law and Transformer Principle.'”

The regional science fair nowadays is an expansive event, with 33 judges (NWOSU students, faculty and emeritus faculty), 70 projects from nine participating area schools (including Aline-Cleo, Alva, Fargo-Gage, Northwest Technology Center/Fairview, Sharon-Mutual, Shattuck, Taloga, Vici and Waynoka), and an annual average expenditure ranging from $4,000-$6,000. The fair's largest expenses are maintaining affiliation with the international fair and the costs associated with sending students to it. The regional science fair is a feeder fair for the Oklahoma State Science & Engineering Fair (OSSEF), which is held annually in Ada at East Central University. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this event as a sponsor, should contact Maier at [email protected].
