Is it better to drive a car after drinking alcohol or ask a friend with no license to drive? That’s apparently the question that faced two women who were stopped in Alva for no headlights. The one with no license was driving.

According to court papers, on June 14 Alva Police Officer William Shahan was on patrol when he saw a vehicle stopped at College and Oklahoma facing east. It was after 10 p.m. and the vehicle’s running lights were on but not the headlights. He turned around and got behind the vehicle to conduct a traffic stop.

The vehicle slowed and turned north on Fifth Street, continuing to travel at a slow pace before pulling into the parking lot at the Assembly of God Church. Shahan spoke to the driver, Demmi Anderson, who said she had no license and had never had a driver’s license. The car belonged to the passenger, Cassandra Blout who said she had been drinking, and that was the reason Anderson was driving.

The pair said they were coming from Buffalo and were in Alva to see friends. They didn’t know the address but said they had just left a house on Noble Street. Shahan questioned Anderson in his patrol vehicle. She said they had visited Logan McClary who just got out of jail. Shahan knew McClary has been charged with possession and sales of controlled dangerous substances.

Shahan then talked to Blount, the owner of the car, and asked if he could search the vehicle. He explained he was suspicious it might contain illegal substances due to the person they had visited. She said, “Yeah, I guess man.”

In a search of the vehicle, Shahan found a green leafy substance that field tested positive for marijuana. He also found an empty vodka bottle and several items of paraphernalia. After some questioning, Blount said all the items belonged to her.

Cassandra Dee Blount, 22, of Shattuck has been charged with two misdemeanors of possession of controlled dangerous substance (marijuana) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
