Beef cattle conference highlighted by stocker panel

Beef producers from across the area are encouraged to attend the Woods County Beef Conference on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Northwest Technology Center in Alva beginning at 4 p.m.

Several prominent speakers will be in attendance including OSU Marketing Specialist Dr. Derrell Peel to discuss cattle markets and current trends in the industry and OSU Beef Specialist Dr. David Lalman with the topic of cattle nutrition and management.

The highlight of the conference is a panel discussion by local stocker cattle producers relating their experience and advice on health and nutrition issues related to receiving light-weight stocker calves. Jesse Chapman of Alva, Jeff Heaton of Capron, Tim Ohm of Alva and Allan Poe of Waynoka will share their thoughts and experiences on receiving stockers for grazing.

Dale Moore of Cattleman’s Choice Feedyard will make a presentation on adding value to your calf crop, OSU Area Ag Economist Trent Milacek will review budgets for stocker calves in 2017 and Woods County Extension Educator Greg Highfill will discuss wheat pasture management of stocker calves.

The program is sponsored by the Woods County OSU Extension Center and all interested producers are welcome to attend. The program meal is sponsored by Wheeler Brothers Grain Company, Alva Vet Supply, Western Equipment Company, Dacoma Farmers Cooperative, the Farmers’ Cooperative Association and Foote’s Farm Supply.
