UAM Volleyball sweeps MVSU on the road

Itta Bena, Miss. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team defeated Mississippi Valley State on the road Wednesday evening in straight sets, 3-0.

Final set scores from the match were 25-19, 25-19, and 27-25 in favor of the Blossoms.

Arkansas-Monticello improves to 7-10 (1-4 GAC) overall this season.

Mississippi Valley State falls to 3-19 on the year.

The Devilettes started off the opening set with a 5-1 lead over UAM, but a 7-0 run by the Blossoms quickly turned the game around with UAM taking advantage of MVSU errors and back-to-back kills from Aubrey Harrison.

Arkansas-Monticello went on to hold a slim lead throughout the remainder of the set, before sealing off the early set win with a 4-0 run to take it 25-19 over Mississippi Valley State, with the help of kills from Kassidy Pomeroy and Vanessa Pawlak.

These two programs continued to battle early on in the beginning of set number two, but UAM was able to find separation due to Devilette errors and kills from Maggie Pyles, and Harrison to hold an 11-6 lead midway through the set.

UAM found offensive production from numerous players in this set with Brittany Hamilton, Laurene Cushinberry, and Pawlak each aiding the Blossoms out to a 21-11 lead in the contest.

MVSU built an 8-2 run however to stage a comeback, but Arkansas-Monticello was able to finish off the Devilettes with a kill from Pawlak, and a service ace from Macy Mitchell for the 25-19 win, and 2-0 match lead.

The Blossoms found themselves playing from behind in set number three with MVSU jumping out to a 10-6 lead early on in the competition.

A 6-0 run in favor of UAM saw the visitors claim a 14-12 lead over the Devilettes with three kills from Pyles, and one from Pomeroy fueling the offensive attack.

This set would continue to see lead changes back-and-forth until a 6-1 run from Arkansas-Monticello surged the Blossoms out in front for the 27-25 set win, with two straight kills from Pyles to end the match, 3-0, in favor of UAM over Mississippi Valley State.

Maggie Pyles led the UAM offensive attack with 19 kills on 38 total attacks, and compiled a .447 hitting percentage as well.

Toryn Cox and Kendall Vondra anchored the Blossoms offensively also with Cox turning in 19 assists, and Vondra totaling 16 on the night.

Macy Mitchell continued to lead the defense this season as she tallied 19 digs overall in the match.

Arkansas-Monticello will next hit the road to take on Great American Conference opponent Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma on Friday, October 6 with first serve slated for 6:00 p.m.
