During the month of September, the rec park collected $47,691 and had expenditures of $49,523, making a loss of $1,832.26. The sales tax revenue constituted $45,691.71 of the collections.

The pooled cash on hand is $347,720.46 and the certificates of deposit total $409,725.29.

Manager Courtney Nesseralla reported the repairs to the irrigation system are almost complete and “good to go.” Maintenance is being done on the four baseball fields. One that had really deteriorated will be laser-leveled and new sod will be put down.

City Manager Joe Don Dunham said he is going to meet with Nesseralla and plan out what capital improvement projects they want to schedule for the next five years and this might include what equipment is needed or what building work should be planned. He said an exact money amount will not be named, but the figures computed rather on what work needs to be done.

Dunham said the shade project is moving forward. He said earlier this week he got the pre-engineering drawings from Morehead Construction. He believes the shade structures will be up before they are needed next season.

The manager said basketball season is getting ready to start. The competitive sign-ups were accomplished by last Friday. There are 18 boys teams and 15 girls teams. Play will start on Nov. 4. Volleyball started Wednesday night this week with seven teams.

Toward the end of the meeting, Greg Glass asked if the contracts with Northwestern have been signed. Dunham said, “Yes, signed and paid.” Glass asked if they were going to come back to be seen by the Alva Recreation Complex (ARC) board. Dunham said the committee members from the ARC board had approved them, but there were not a lot of changes. Dunham said the contract would not come back to the ARC board for approval. Glass asked if he could see a copy, and both Dunham and Nesseralla said, “Yes.” Nesseralla said Coach Jill Webb, softball coach of the college, is easy to work with and the two “have a great working relationship.”

In other comments, board member Brandon Sherman asked if there was a possibility of setting up Futsal teams in the gym. Nesseralla asked, “What is that?” (A website described it this way: “Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played with five-man teams on a basketball style court with no walls and a smaller, low-bouncing ball.”) Nesseralla said, “Bring a written proposal and let me look at it, although it might be difficult to find court-time, particularly during basketball season.”
