Pontius Pilate was a man possessed of great power. He acted with the authority of Rome, backed up amply by a garrison of her well-trained soldiers. He was a savvy politician and had learned, though years of experience, how to deal with the religious leadership of Judea. He was nobody’s patsy. History might have forgotten him altogether, if not for Jesus of Nazareth.
The Jewish leadership did not have the needed clout to get rid of Jesus on their own. Too many mistakes had stripped them of their right to wield the death penalty. They needed the authority of the Roman prefect.
