Alva exhibit calls attention to child abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Last year the state of Oklahoma saw nearly 10,000 children in foster care.

Today, April 6, is Wear Blue Selfie Day to help promote and strengthen child abuse prevention efforts in communities. Share your best selfie with others and ask co-workers to join. You are encouraged to post the picture on social media using #PictureaBrighterFuture or #OKdo1thing.

In Alva, a display on the north side of the courthouse lawn (featured on the front cover) recognizes child abuse prevention month. Each of the figures shown represents a real child in Woods County who has been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect.

The display is sponsored by Northwest Oklahoma CASA. Based in Woodward, the organization covers Woodward, Woods, Ellis, Alfalfa, Beaver, Harper and Texas counties. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. It is a non-profit organization that trains and supervises community volunteers who are court appointed to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children with active cases within the child welfare system.
