Final meeting with Steve Parkhurst as superintendent

The Alva Board of Education scheduled an end-of-fiscal-year meeting for Wednesday evening. Retiring Superintendent Steve Parkhurst handled about half the meeting, and then he invited incoming Superintendent Tim Argo to take over where the agenda contained items about the 2019 school year.

Several resignations were handled: Shannon Drew will leave the Alva Middle School and take a position with the Waukomis Public Schools. Suzanne Walter will resign from the Alva Schools and take a teaching position with South Barber USD 255 in Kiowa, Kansas, teaching Spanish and art in grades 7-12. F. Gene Olbert resigned from his teaching position at Alva High School. He said he will continue teaching general psychology on Monday night at Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

A transfer was approved. Tracye Quinlan will move from high school secretary to a paraprofessional job at Lincoln.

Louis Zwiefelhofer resigned as custodian at Longfellow School. Karol Parsons hired on as custodian at Alva Middle School and Clayton Walker will work at the bus barn and also in maintenance.

Marcus Mead was hired for high school special ed, and Megan Schulze will teach kindergarten at Washington Elementary. NWOSU's Dr. Steve Maier will teach one hour of physics at Alva High School.

Extra duty assignments were made to complete the summer FY2018 sports programs. Dalton Beeler will be paid $1,970 to assist in summer football; Brandy Brown will earn $800 for coaching summer cheerleading. Kanon Collins will be paid $500 to serve as middle school summer coach.

Chance Davis will be paid $1,710 as an assistant summer coach; Shane Feely will be paid $2,137.50 as head summer basketball coach. Margo Hamilton will be paid $1,000 as middle school summer coach. Cody Hooper will be paid $500 as middle school summer coach; Ty Hooper will be paid $1,000 for summer baseball.

Pete Phillips will be paid $1,710 to assist with summer basketball. Taylor Schwerdtfeger will be paid $3,067.50 as head summer football coach. Michael Shklar will be paid $1,970 for assistant summer coach; Megan Stratton will be paid $700 for head summer softball coach; Jennifer Taylor will earn $1,700 for summer basketball coach and $540 for assistant summer softball coach. Ryne Wilson will be paid $1,970 for assistant summer coach.

The board approved participating in the Oklahoma Schools Insurance Group. The total value of the Alva property was shown as $53,724,840. Last year's premium was $124,837 and this year's premium will be $126,791. Last year, the Alva District had six claims totaling $36,943.

The board also approved the OSAG Workers' Compensation Insurance quote. The total price was $45,862, but because of a member dividend credit of $5,927.29, the cost will fall to $39,934.71.

The board renewed the Prisoner's Public Work Contract with Bill Johnson Correctional Center. The prisoners will work this July and next June at a cost to the schools of $270 per month plus 10 percent administrative fee.

Darbi Hiinde, MSPT, will continue serving students this summer at the rate of $25 per 15 minutes of ESY service time.

The board approved the NWOSU stadium use contract at $5,000 per game.
