More July Business for Kiowa City Council

When Roof America did roof work on the Chief Theater in Kiowa, they found several issues including gutter deterioration. The council members approved spending $16,510.55 for estimated repairs. City Administrator Lou Leone said the city has room in the CIP fund to cover this additional cost.

Discussing traffic ordinance updates, Leone reminded J-turns on Kiowa's Main Street are illegal because it is a state highway and tickets will be issued.

The council adopted Ordinance 18-452: Uniform Public Offense Code. They also adopted Standard Traffic Ordinance for Kansas Cities.

Leone told council members that his office staff made a form to field visitors who visit the city office to speak to him. That's because some days he can hardly work for all the traffic in the office. Sometimes one visitor will take one to one-and-a-half hours. Despite that attempt by staff, Leone said, “It didn't go over well.”

At the July regular meeting the council had already hired a new police chief as reported. Now the city is advertising for police officers.

With the new pool house open at the swimming pool, Leone said they are planning an appreciation day with a free swim and food. The date will be announced.

Under council items, R.L. Simpson he still wants the city to pursue a trampoline park requested when the city administrator visited with students at school.

Councilmember Tom Wells thanked the Simpson crew for flying the huge flag over Kiowa's Main Street on the Fourth of July.

Councilmember Russ Molz asked about letters the city sent out for unmowed yards. City Clerk Trish Brewer said the landowner has 10 days to act before they are cited.
