Thousands of Americans reach retirement age each year. Many of them plan to “age in place.”

If that brings up connotations of grab bars, toilet seat risers and access ramps, you’re not alone. Anyone who plans to stay in their current location needs to do their homework, making the space more comfortable, convenient and safe.

These are not unreasonable goals for home-dwellers of any age. AARP says that by the year 2035, one in five Americans will be over the age of 65 and 90 percent of them plan to stay in their home.
