The Ladybugs fell in the opening round of the 50th annual Wheat Capital Basketball Tournament.

The Alva Ladybugs fell 31-24 to the Lady Horns of Chisholm High School in the opening round of the 50th annual Wheat Capital Basketball Tournament Thursday evening at Chisholm.

Chisholm led the Ladybugs 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Ladybugs found their offense in the first quarter in part due to the Durkee sisters. Hallie Durkee made a three-point basket after receiving a pass from Payton Jones at the 4:35 mark in the first quarter. The second basket came under the three-minute mark as Chloe Durkee knocked down her three-point basket.

Jones and Acacia Charles had a combined eight rebounds in the first quarter. Alva struggled to get any real traction on offense versus the Lady Horns as they turned the ball over six times in the first period.

Both teams played strong defense in the second quarter. Chisholm outscored Alva 5-2 in the second period, ending the first half up 17-8. Alva's points in the second quarter came by way of Jones, who went two of two from the free throw line.

The Lady Horns respond in the third quarter by outscoring the Ladybugs 9-4. Alva found their offense in the third quarter from Hallie Durkee who went one of two from the free throw line and Stephanie Spellman who made a three-point basket from the baseline. Jones also picked up four rebounds in the quarter, bringing her total to 12 through three quarters.

Alva found their rhythm late in the fourth quarter as the team outscored Chisholm 12 to 5. Jones led the quarter in scoring for the Ladybugs.

At the 4:54 mark, Jones hit a three-point basket. During the following offensive procession Jones was fouled in the act of shooting, but made both free throw attempts.

At the 3:58 mark Chloe Durkee drove to the basket and was fouled; she made both of her free throw attempts. Charles received the pass at the free throw line and knocked down the jump shot with 1:30 seconds to go in the game.

The Ladybugs started to press the Lady Horns and forced a turnover around the 1:15 second mark. Jones for Alva knocked down a three-point basket.

Under the one-minute mark the Ladybugs could not connect on any of their other attempts.
