Radio and television call letters – Part 1

March 29, 2019

This story grew out of a conversation my wife and I had recently, and it was her idea that I should turn it into an article. After thinking about it a bit, I agreed with her.

My wife has shown up in a few of my articles before, but she is always a little nervous when I tell her that I will mention her.

Consequently, I usually let her read my columns before I submit them so that she will not be surprised by anything that I might say.

So, since she is reading this, allow me to say that she is a wonderful person! She is one in a million – perfect in every way! I couldn’t bear the thought of living without her!

Anyway, one of the things I liked about my wife from the very beginning of our relationship is that she has a great amount of intellectual curiosity. Nothing is too small or insignificant to pique her interest.

Let me give you the best example I can. When I met her she was working at the Oklahoma Historical Society’s museum in Enid. The museum uses lots of volunteers who show up occasionally to help out.

One of the volunteers was a retired gentleman. One day he told my wife that he had brought some things from home that he needed to take to “the landfill” (that is, the city dump) and that he was going to make a quick trip out there.

My wife asked him: “Do you mind if I go with you?” Surprised, the man said: “You want to go to the landfill?” To which my wife replied: “Yeah. I’ve never been to the landfill before. I’d like to see what it looks like.” And so she went!

That’s what I mean by saying that she has intellectual curiosity. All of which is background information for the rest of this article – a conversation she and I had about radio and television call letters.

I’ll tell you about that in part 2 next week.
