Eagles stumble against Southern Nazarene

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 2, 2019) – Southern Nazarene banged out 15 hits and the Crimson Storm used two big innings late in the game to pull away for a 12-6 upset of Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday night at Dobson Field.

The win gave SNU (6-24) a split of its two regular-season games against OC (20-9), which is ranked sixth in the South Central Region.

The Crimson Storm took full advantage of eight walks issued by OC pitchers, who also hit three batters with pitches. OC fielders committed two errors, both in a four-run eighth inning for SNU that effectively decided the game.

OC led 2-0 after Grant Lake's single down the right-field line scored Kevin Collyar in the second inning, and the Eagles were up 3-2 after Callen Crockett doubled and scored in the third. Crockett led OC's 11-hit attack by going 3 for 5 with two doubles.

SNU took the lead at 6-3 with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Mason Haydock. The Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and tied the game when Lake again singled home Collyar.

SNU reliever Noah Serrano (1-0) quelled the OC uprising, eventually pitching 3 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball. His teammates made that pay off.

A.J. Nelums singled off OC reliever Julien Ly (1-1) with one out in the seventh and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole Lee. SNU posted another four-run inning in the eighth, batting around for the second time in the game, and the Crimson Storm added an insurance run in the ninth.

Garrett Wages, Collyar and Lake each had two hits for OC while Hunter Markwardt went 1 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

OC will host Lubbock Christian (Texas), ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, for a key three-game Heartland Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m. and a single Saturday at 1 p.m.
