Legion motorcycle riders to carry American flag from Mexico to Canada

American Legion riders Jim Hurst, Clint Strawn, Chris Grieve and James Burke, and others from Alva Legion Post No. 92, will be meeting the Centennial Riders at Bouse Junction to escort them to Alva on Saturday, Aug. 3.

American Legion Motorcycle Riders from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota will be making a 1,875-mile ride July 31 to Aug. 4 on U.S. Highway 281 also known as American Legion Memorial Highway.

The south half of the ride will begin in Pharr, Texas, on the Texas-Mexico border, where riders will be known as Team Vision. They will continue to Great Bend, Kansas, where they will meet with the second group of riders who traveled south from the Canada-North Dakota border. The northern group of riders are known as Team Legacy. The riders will make 60 stops at American Legion Posts where the commanders of each post will sign the half banner carried by the riders.

When the Legacy Riders from the north and the Vision Riders from the south meet in Great Bend, Kansas, the banners will be connected into one banner that will commemorate the American Legion's Centennial Celebration, as well as the naming of U.S Highway 281 the American Legion Memorial Highway. This banner will then be presented to American Legion National Commander Brett P. Reistad at the 101st American Legion National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, in late August.

The Centennial Riders from Texas should arrive in Alva at the Cherokee Strip Museum on Saturday, Aug. 3, around 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., coming from the south on Highway 281.

The Alva American Legion is asking that people come out, park and line Highway 281 south of Alva or Highway 64 on Oklahoma Boulevard west to the Cherokee Strip Museum to welcome the riders as they travel to the museum. They will be greeted by the Alva Fire Department, truck No. 1, flying the American flag.

Alva American Legion Post No. 92 will serve dinner to the riders on Saturday evening at the annex and have the museum open for viewing.

Scotty Cox, Alva Legion commander, stated, "We are asking Alva to give a big welcome to these American Legion Centennial Motorcycle Riders to show our patriotism and support for our veterans and the American Legion."

The Centennial Riders will spend the night in Alva and continue their ride to Kansas on Sunday morning.
