We're special because God counts us worthy

October 4, 2019

As I began my senior year at Harding University (go Bison) I was invited to join a service organization known as Alpha Gamma Omega. It’s actually a Greek word meaning “I lead.” I was honored. Then we arrived at the day of the inductions. Early in the morning, members of the group began showing up at my dorm door. Each brought with them an article of clothing, carefully selected to make the wearer as well dressed as possible. I looked better, crossing that campus, than I had ever looked before and felt completely honored by my friends. Other groups were dressed as clowns and ninjas. I was dressed to impress – in a borrowed suit and someone else’s shoes.

Just last week, I had a similar experience. I took a day off to enjoy some golf with two of my favorite brothers in Christ: we’ll call them Thing One and Thing Two. It seems that Thing One had broken down and purchased a brand new set of clubs and a new bag in which to carry them. Add to that his disdain for my bright pink Kmart driver and way-too-broken-down bag and you have the perfect opportunity to share. Thing One passed along his irons to Thing Two, who then passed along his (much nicer than mine) set of irons to me. In addition, Thing One gifted me with his “old” bag and his slightly used Callaway driver and three-wood (shiny, black and not purchased at Kmart).

It made me think back to that day at Harding when a group of guys made me feel special by dressing me in their own clothing and counting me as “worthy.” Jesus is certainly that way. Paul reminds his Colossian brethren that when they were baptized into Jesus, they were “clothed” with Christ.

We are wrapped up in all the good stuff and God counts us as “worthy.” We should, every day, feel special by reason of our connection to the King of King and Lord of Lords. That He counts us (makes us) worthy of wearing His name is an amazing gift, indeed. You can’t get that at Kmart. See you Sunday.
